Close Calls
If you are constantly having close calls on the road, it is a warning
sign that you are doing something wrong. We tend to view close calls as
a fact of driving life. I suppose they are within reason, but if you have
two “oh shoot” experiences a week, it might be you. Close
calls usually occur because of a lack of attention. Consistent close calls
mean we must become more focused on the driving task.
We have all heard the phrase, “watch out for the other guy,”
yet many of us resist the concept. Why do I have to watch out for the
other guy? I didn’t take him in to feed and raise. The reason you
watch out for him is because he might not be watching out for you. If
you aren’t aware of other drivers, you put your life in their hands,
and most of them haven’t been to this website yet.
Take responsibility for your own driving. Use close calls as a warning
that perhaps you are not paying as much attention as you should. Driving
isn’t very difficult; just put it between two white lines and don’t
hit anything. The problems we face on the road are rarely caused by a
breakdown in skills. Almost always, they are generated by silly mistakes
caused by a lack of focus.
