The Middle Finger
You know what my problem is with giving another driver the middle finger?
It doesn’t work. Have you ever flipped someone off or cussed someone
out? After doing it, has that person even once pulled you over and said
“Oh thank you, I’ll be better now; all it took was you flipping
me off and cussing me out, and I have learned my lesson?” Bet that’s
never happened, has it? In one gesture, you’ve made the road that
much more difficult for all of us.
Please don’t tell me it makes you feel better to flip someone off.
If it makes you feel better, how come your face is all red and mean and
nasty while you are doing it? I’ve seen a lot of folks flip someone
off. Never once have I seen anyone do it with a smile on their face. It
would be different if our obscene gesturing solved the problem, but that
action just makes it worse.
The road has turned into a sewer because many of us never give the other
person the benefit of the doubt. We are so worried about our own problems
that we forget the other driver is human also. Remember something about
the road: it doesn’t belong to you. We share it. When we understand
that it’s our road and begin to see people driving instead of just
chunks of metal, then the need to scream, cuss and make obscene gestures
will just melt away.
