Are You an Automotive Proctologist?
Why do we tailgate? The simple answer is we tailgate to intimidate. We know it’s wrong;
we know it’s dangerous, yet we all do it. For many of us, a slow driver in the left lane
is like waving a red flag in front of a cranky bull. So we put on our rubber glove and see how
close we can get to the other guys back bumper in hopes that our actions will stimulate him to
speed up or move.
You know what my problem is with this behavior? It doesn’t work. For many of us, a tailgater
simply means we take our foot off the gas. If it’s been kind of a tough day, we might even
brake check. And if it’s been one of those really horrible days, heck we may just slam
on our brakes and scream, “We’re all going to die.”
Is this getting through at all? We tailgate slow drivers to get them to speed up, and most of
the time, they slow down. I like to call that government thinking. I’m not telling you
to quit tailgating because it’s rude. You need to stop because it will kill you and it
doesn’t work.
